Is Apple really evil?
I have been trying to stay out of this one all week. Those of you who know me, know I used to bleed six colors. They say you never stop, but I think I did back around 2002. You see, I was at Apple when we were going out of business. I witnessed the last and final keynote of Gil Amelio. I was there when Steve returned and threw out all the products we had been selling. I was in Tucson AZ in August sweating my butt off for the iMac rollout. I was a strong supporter and contributor to the "Evangelist" and had a web site news aggregator called the Mac InfoZone (anybody remember that one) back when Apple needed all the help it could get to stay relevant.
Back then, everyone hated Apple for losing to Microsoft and the clone army. We could do no right because we refused for so long to fight evil. Then we fought back with ads (remember the bunny suit ad, the steamroller ad, the Think Different campaign?). We fought back with a simplified product line and a new OS based on an open source kernel. We fought back with a browser based on what we would release to the open source community as Webkit (a core building block that allowed Google to make the world's fastest browser). All of us that worked at Apple from 1997 to the mid 2000's fought hard and fought fair to bring the company back from the brink and to create "insanely great" products once again.
The latest meme circulating primarily amongst disgruntled Apple developers is this notion that they have been wronged by an evil Apple. Wronged because Apple is very cautious of the quality of its products and image. Pissed that Apple is protecting what we all worked our asses off to rebuild all those years. And acting like spoiled brats and running to Google for cover.
This past week, Google really lost points with me for their negative attacks on Apple. While I understand the concept of competition, I am confused why they feel it is so necessary to be insulting. Since leaving Apple and the Mac platform nearly 8 years ago, I have embraced lots of technology that frankly I was oblivious too, being so wrapped up in Apple for all those years. I became a Google fanboy (much like I was an Apple Fan Boy in the day) and used all their products (and still do). But I don't like this new Google. I don't like their nasty attitude and nature. As a consumer who is not a developer, I am not tied to Google, or Apple or anyone. But I want to see Google and Apple succeed because I understand the world without them and it sucked, big time. Google needs Apple, and Apple needs Google. They both need to grow up and be adults for a change. Especially Google.
