Social media without a use case
Social media tools come in all shapes and sizes. But some of them seem to lack a compelling use case. For example, ping.fm is one of those tools that seems full of promise but I can't really figure out what to do with it. Maybe I don't use enough tools in general to require a cross post tool like ping. Maybe because I am a Posterous user I am spoiled by their excellent cross-post capability and therefore don't really need anything more. Download a copy of the Share This widget sometime and take a look at the dozens of social media tools they support. Its amazing. But do we really need so many tools? And are their even use cases for many of these.
Beyond Twitter for broadcast and microblogging, Facebook for close friend contact and LinkedIn for business network building, I don't really get the rest of the tools out there. And I am in the small percentage of geeks that generally get all this stuff. I live and breath it. I can't imagine how my non-tech friends deal, let alone my parents. I think a lot of these tools overlap to the point of adding more noise and less signal to the social toolbox.
